Marge, the reason we have elected officials is so we don't have to think!

This is a quote from the Simpsons (I think). This quote is also a joke, because it makes the statement that we are supposed to not think because we trust our elected officials to do that for us.

This is funny because his reasoning is wrong. We have elected officials because we live in a republic. When the United States was founded, a direct democracy was too difficult to create because communication was very slow.

Additionally, most people do not trust elected officials, so this is humorous to a political pessimist for that reason as well.
