I said, “No, I don’t hate your relatives. In fact, I like your mother-in-law a lot better than I like mine.”
Hopefully this didn't really happen.
The humor in this joke is that the person is using the incorrect words for something to make it appear different than it actually is. The joke is insinuating that the wife's accusation is actually correct, because a better way to say "your mother-in-law" would be to say "my mom", which negates the entirety of his argument.
